HOOKED NESTS

 I love hooking bird's nests!   I have yet to add the bird!   This is the start of my fall nest. I'll show you how it progresses.  I sell every one I hook so obviously a popular subject.  The fun part is the nest. You'll see in the next photo that I will be using yarn (eyelash is great), unspun wool. sticks, feathers,raffia, and anything else I can think of!   I'll be producing a line of these patterns on the theme in the near future!

Negative Painting Technique

 I call this "Fiesta Tulips."  In the fall I'll be teaching an intensive 6 week Negative painting class at Anne Arundel Community College. This technique involves using Gesso and instead of painting the negative space, color is removed from it.  It is tricky but so addictive!  Check my web site for dates and times.  This class  is appropriate for painters with basic skills, but not beginners. www.paintpencil.com 

Color Pencil

  Color Pencil is my third medium. It is as relaxing as rug hooking but even slower!   I have won awards for my pencil work and will be starting some new pieces this year. My first experience with color pencil was to color plan my rugs.  This led to more experimentation and I realized it wasn't just for kids anymore!  

In addition to a good tool in color planning, it also combines well with watercolor. I begin with 300 lb hot press watercolor paper and lay down the washes of color with the paint. I develop the design on top of the wash using the pencil. Occasionally I throw in a little ink.

This piece is a favorite. I love to break  borders using positive and negative space.

Winter, Reflections and a possible painting

  I woke up this morning to a coating of snow outside the window and my plants in full bloom. The colorful blossoms against the cold window pane with the inside reflections  made me take this picture. I plan to paint it. Window reflection are a challenge in watercolor.  I am starting to yearn for the spring weather again!!!!
